Cardiff City F.C. are Wales’ most prominent football club. Based in the Welsh capital city of Cardiff, Cardiff City is the only club outside of England to have won the FA Cup and currently competes in the Premier League. Nicknamed the Bluebirds, the club plays at Cardiff City Stadium. Cardiff City was founded in 1899 as an offshoot of the Riverside Cricket Club. The club was admitted to the Football League’s Second Division in 1920 and immediately won promotion to the English top flight the following year. The 1920s remain the most successful years of City’s history to date as the club enjoyed seven consecutive seasons in the First Division, reaching two FA Cup finals and winning one against Arsenal in 1927. City soon fell back to football’s second tier and the club has largely remained in England’s lower divisions since, barring a two season return to the top flight in the early 1960s. However, the club regularly challenged for the Welsh Cup, winning it on 22 occasions. Success in the Welsh Cup has given Cardiff City its fair share of European adventures as the Bluebirds have competed – and won - against the likes of Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners Cup. In the 21st century Cardiff City has re-established itself as a second tier club and even challenged for cup success again, competing in the 2008 FA Cup Final against Portsmouth and the 2012 League Cup Final against Liverpool. The Bluebirds have even won promotion to the Premier League twice in the 2010s in 2012-13 and 2017-18. Any football fan in Wales should consider paying the Bluebirds a visit.
