Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

The King And I is one of the greatest musicals made in the 20th Century. The musical, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, is based on Margaret Landon's novel Anna and the King of Siam.

The stage musical The King and I first premiered in 1951 and was turned into a film in 1956. The legendary film starred Deborah Kerr as Anna and Yul Brynner as The King. The musical has won numerous Tony and Academy Awards in its various forms.

With a superior score of treasured songs including; Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance, and featuring a company of over 50 world-class performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre.

Its current UK tour sees West End superstar Annalene Beechey (Les Mis, The Phantom of the Opera) and Broadway's Jose Llana take on the mantle of the King and Anna, visiting Birmingham, Edinburgh, Hull and more around the UK. They come following Kelli O'Hara and Ken Watanabe starring for the West End edition, was filmed at the London Palladium and screened around the country.

The UK's second largest city, known as 'The workshop of the world' for the great role it played during the Industrial Revolution, has much more to offer than its industrial legacy. 

Birmingham is home to several major cultural institutions that aim to rival their equivalents down in London. Visitors to 'Brum' can listen to the City of Birmingham's stunning Symphony Orchestra at the Symphony Hall, or watch a play at the Birmingham Rep Theatre, Britain's longest-established producing theatre. The city also houses the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Opera Company, the latter of which is renowned for its innovative productions.

On the musical front, Birmingham has pioneered several genres of music in the UK including jazz, heavy metal and reggae. Venues such as the Arena Birmingham welcome the world's biggest pop megastars while smaller rock acts can be caught at the O2 Academy or the O2 Institute. Comedy fans also flock to the Glee Club, the first dedicated comedy club to spring up outside of London.

Commonly referred to as 'The Alex', the The Alexandra stands as one of Birmingham's most celebrated venues for theatre. In recent years The Alex has seen productions like Scrooge, Copacabana and Grease take to its stage, and a redevelopment of the stage and front of house led to shows like Les Mis and Oliver! taking over.
