About

Watford F.C. are a club on the up. Hailing from the town of Watford, Hertfordshire, Watford F.C. boasts star fans including Sir Elton John and is enjoying its most prolonged spell in the Premier League yet. Nicknamed the Hornets, the club plays at Vicarage Road, Watford. Watford F.C. was founded as Watford Rovers in 1881, competing in the Southern League until it entered the Football League in 1920. The club spent most of its early history in English football’s lower divisions until Sir Elton John became club chairman in 1976, appointing future England manager Graham Taylor as manager in 1977. Taylor’s appointment sent the Hornets on a rapid ascent up the football pyramid, culminating in a second place finish in the First Division in 1982-83 and an FA Cup Final in 1984, the club’s only major final to date. After Taylor’s departure in 1987, the club went into decline until Taylor returned as manager in 1997, leading Watford back to the Premier League for the 1999-00 season. Watford experienced another odd season in the Premier League in 2006-07 until it was promoted again in 2014-15, and it has stayed in the Premier League ever since. Watford has only ever won lower division titles but is currently enjoying its longest spell in England’s top-flight since the 1980s under the ownership of the Pozzo family, also owners of the Italian Serie A club Udinese. Promising a buzzing atmosphere in the compact stadium of Vicarage Road, Watford is a team worth catching for yourself.
