See Fiddler On The Roof at the Playhouse Theatre

The classic Broadway musical that inspired to Oscar-winning film has been ‘exuberantly revived’ (The Telegraph) by Trevor Nunn. With the same original score, the tale of tradition, community and young love is as heart-warming as ever. After tickets sold out during its run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ transferred to the Playhouse Theatre in March, 2019 for a strictly-limited run. The musical first opened in 1964 on Broadway. Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s music and Joseph Stein’s book made history as the longest-running Broadway musical. The winner of nine Tony Awards, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ has been revived, revamped and restored several times. It holds a special place in pop culture via parodies, references and musical covers, but nothing beats watching the live production. The latest adaptation of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ brings Stein’s timeless story to life. It follows Tevye, a Jewish man with five daughters living in a traditional town in post-revolution Russia. While the Jewish and Russian community live in delicate balance, Tevye soon finds himself having to embrace change and new traditions. His daughters are growing up and falling in love, but not to the men he had hoped. The rise of anti-Jewish sentiments are beginning to cause tension in his community. And to top it off, one of his daughters wants to marry a Russian, non-Jewish man. The challenging and emotive story has become one of the most well-loved of all time. Laurence Olivier and Tony Award-winning Trevor Nunn directs the musical beautifully. He gives every detail ‘texture, a delicacy and authenticity’ (WhatsOnStage) and gives a new edge to the nostalgic musical. Alongside his extraordinary direction, the adaptation uses Jerome Robbins’ original Tony Award-winning choreography. Also, find all the favourites from the memorable score including ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ and ‘Matchmaker, Matchmaker’. The show bursts with expression, powerful movement and a gritty new vibe.
