See Little Miss Sunshine at the New Theatre Cardiff

The Off-Broadway production by James Lapine (Into the Woods) and William Finn (Falsettos) lands in London at the Arcola Theatre. The Award-winning creative pair have successfully transformed the award-winning film for stage, retaining the humour and touching moments from the blockbuster. Little Miss Sunshine hit cinema screens in 2006, became a stage sensation in the US in 2011, and is now set to take the UK by storm. The show's plot is largely in keeping with that of the film. It follows the Hoover family as they embark on a road trip from New Mexico to California, set on reaching the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. The story hilariously picks up on the interworkings of the family unit, playfully addressing family dynamics and the role of each family member and character. It lightheartedly packs all members into a creaky VW campervan, watching as they endure each other and come out of the trip with different perspectives. Thanks to Finn's fantastic score, Little Miss Sunshine on stage is full of original music that enhances the plot and makes for an entertaining theatre experience. As in the US, it is expected that audiences will leave London's Arcola fully satisfied with the musical adaptation of the witty and lovable family satire.

About

One of Wales’ leading venues for diverse dramatics, New Theatre offers the Cardiff community a year round programme of West End musicals, pantomimes, children’s shows and more. It further branches out to integrate other stage acts, such as stand up comedy and dance performances. The theatre celebrates over a century of work in the performing arts. Many theatre legends appear in the venue’s archives, such as Laurel and Hardy, Anna Pavlova, Bette Davis and Shirley Bassey. More recently, the likes of Ian McKellen, Stefanie Powers, John Barrowman and showbiz star Bruce Forsyth have all worked its stage. The venue has seen a string of fantastic West End productions, including ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘The Songbook of Judy Garland’ starring the ‘Wizard of Oz’ actress’ daughter, Lorna Luft, ‘The Mousetrap’ and ‘Peter Pan’, starring ‘Baywatch’s' David Hasselhoff as 'Captain Hook'. Its prolific history of providing world-class theatre is complemented by the theatre’s traditional architecture. Built in 1906, the building was designed by architects Runtz and Ford in typical Edwardian Baroque fashion. Upon opening, the site was lavishly carpeted and tastefully embellished in cream and gold. The walls were ornate and elegant while the seats were upholstered in plush red velvet, living up to the dramatic and stereotypical image of traditional theatres. Despite many refurbishments, the New Theatre retains its old charms and characteristics, seducing contemporary theatre-goers to this day.
