See Motown: The Musical at the Oxford New Theatre
Relive the magic of Motown this Christmas as the hit sensation lands at the New Theatre. Motown the Musical brings over 40 songs from the 60’s and 70’s to Oxford for the ultimate night out.
Motown the Musical focuses on the man at the centre of it all. It chronicles the life of Berry Gordy, Founder of Motown Records. The show is heavily based on his memoir, and recalls his relationships with some of the biggest stars in the world. From launching the careers of Diana Ross to Michael Jackson, Motown was one of the biggest moments in the history of music. Now you watch his journey to creating one of the most momentous music empires played out on stage.
The show premiered in April 2013 in the US, but has since won over audiences around the globe. From the 31st August, Motown the Musical heads out on its UK tour stopping at the New Theatre, Oxford along the way.
The story begins in 1983, on the 25th anniversary of the record label. Gordy looks back at himself as a young man and how he got to where he is. He reflects on his journey to creating the musical empire, as well as the social and political climate of America. It explores the successes and losses of Motown, starting from its early stars like Mary Wells and Stevie Wonder.
Throughout the juxebox musical, many songs recapture the magic of the decades. Some of the classics that are featured in Motown: The Musical include; ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, ‘My Girl’, ‘I Heard Through The Grapevine’ and ‘Dancing in the Streets.’
