The Birthday Massacre (or shortened to TBM), are a Canadian band known for their mix of gothic rock, dark wave and electronic. They formed in 1999 going by the name Imagica, taken from Clive Barker’s fantasy novel of the same name, but after three years they changed to The Birthday Massacre in 2002 to avoid confusion. Vocalist Chibi explained that the name was meant to express the contrast that they represent in their music, light and dark, cute and evil, a birthday and a massacre.
TBM caught the rise of file sharing on the internet and road it to the top, initially offering their music for free by using Napster and their own official website. They were very active online, constantly updating with new content, operating in multiple languages and interacting with fans, constructing another site just for fans to post and contribute their own fan-content.
Throughout their career, TBM have released seven albums, their latest being ‘Under Your Spell’, funded through PledgeMusic, a platform for direct-to-fan music, peaking at #7 on Billboard’s US Independent Albums chart.
