Almost 70 years have passed since the original performance of The King and I on Broadway. The multi-award-winning show, which won a Tony Award for ‘Best Musical’, has continued to dazzle audiences over the years. Now on a world tour following a record-breaking run in the West End, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I is coming to the Liverpool Empire.
On a mission to modernise his country, the King hires British governess Anna to teach English to his wives and children. Yet as cultures and politics collide, the pair develop a heated relationship. They spar on just about everything, but their clashes inevitably lead to romance.
This revival of The King and I on first hit the West End in 2018 in a showcase at the London Palladium, starring Kelli O'Hara and Ken Watanabe. The show is now embarking on a UK tour. Tickets for the King and I are available in Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow and other cities. Annalene Beechey will star as Anna, while Jose Llana will play the King of Siam.
Directed by Tony Award winner Bart Sher, The King and I features lavish costumes and stunning imagery. It also has one of the finest scores in musical history, featuring beloved numbers like ‘Getting to Know You’ and ‘Shall We Dance’.
