With a superior score of treasured songs including; Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance, and featuring a company of over 50 world-class performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre.

About

A popular centre in Workington for all sorts of entertainment, the Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre hosts various live performances and workshops for all ages and interests. It opened over a century ago, rooting its place in the city’s growing cultural scene through delivering years of diverse shows of the performing arts. The theatre was named after the millionaire master of iron, Andrew Carnegie, who provided a valuable donation towards the venue in 1904. It began life as a lecture hall and library, already considered a pillar of the community in being free and open to all. It transitioned over the years to the entertainment sector, continuing to be part of the Workington society but through predominantly music and dance shows alongside classes and courses. Whether you want to learn how to sing, act, street dance, tap dance or simply master karate, the arts centre is full of weekly classes to enjoy. The broad bill of live shows is not exclusive to musical gigs and dance, but extends to comedy, opera, world events, musicals, spoken word, and family shows. Beyond performing arts, Carnegie is also used for community-based events, business seminars and ceremonies. The site features a stunning theatre, complete with a proscenium arch and traditional rich, red decor, a spacious foyer where theatre-goers can purchase artisan ice cream and other confectionery, two studios, a boardroom and Monroes Bar. The bar has been staging smaller gigs and various performances since the mid 80’s, transforming into a stage, seating area, dance floor or party - depending on the event.
