Since opening in 2000, the O2 Academy, Birmingham has attracted some of the hottest and highest profile acts to the West Midlands. Over the past fifteen years the 3,000 capacity venue, now based in Horsefair, has become a hub for Birmingham nightlife, regularly hosting indie, rock and comedy shows as well as the famous UK club night Propaganda.
The venue that is now the O2 Academy started out in the Dale End district of Birmingham and was first used as a bingo hall in the 60s before taking off as music venue the Hummingbird in the 1980s. As the Hummingbird the venue became steeped in historical performances from the likes of Nirvana, Sonic Youth and The Beastie Boys, closing its doors in 1994. The Hummingbird was refurbished and renamed the Birmingham Academy in 2000 as it became a member of the Academy Music Group.
The Academy, now sponsored by O2, moved to Horsefair in 2009 and has since welcomed the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Black Sabbath and The Prodigy to play there. With its main 3,000 capacity space supplemented by two smaller rooms for new and developing talents, the O2 Academy is built just for the kind of intimate, unforgettable shows fans dream of.
