The second largest purpose-built music venue in the city after De Montfort Hall, the O2 Academy Leicester lies at the heart of student life thanks to its site at the University of Leicester Students’ Union. The 1,450-capacity venue can always be relied upon for live music and raucous student club nights. The Academy is based on one of the oldest sites of the University of Leicester campus, built in 1957 when the University received official university status. Artists such as Led Zeppelin, The Smiths, The Rolling Stones and The Jam all appeared at the venue in its original incarnation, until it was acquired by the Academy Music Group and given an extensive refurbishment. The new Academy officially opened in September 2010 with a storming performance by UK rapper Professor Green. The venue has hosted shows from established and up-and-coming acts ever since, including a homecoming show by local heroes Kasabian in 2011. As with other O2 Academies, the Leicester Academy boasts two additional venues operating at the same time as its main room: the 500-capacity Academy2 and the 250-capacity Academy3.
