Dominating the Sheffield landscape with its white cubic structure, the O2 Academy Sheffield is a prime musical hotspot for the city. The former site of the famous Roxy Disco, the Academy has asserted its own identity since opening in 2008, providing a venue for all rock and pop lovers. The Sheffield Academy started life as the live music venue and nightclub The Top Rank Suite in 1968, which hosted classic gigs by artists such as The Clash, Joy Division and David Bowie. By the mid-80s disco had truly taken hold and the Top Rank Suite transformed into the legendary Roxy nightclub, dominating Sheffield’s cultural scene for decades. Heritage like this would be hard to top, but the Academy Music Group acquired the building in 2007 and in 2008 the Sheffield Academy was born, playing host to local band Reverend and the Makers. Since then the Sheffield Academy has gone from strength to strength, hosting international touring stars in its 2,350-capacity main auditorium or up-and-coming artists in its smaller rooms. Visitors in recent years include Elbow, Rita Ora and The Prodigy. See and compare ticket prices for gigs at the O2 Academy, Sheffield below.
