It was rebuilt by the famous theatre architect Frank Matcham twice in 1897 and 1909 before it became the Tivoli in July 1910. During its early years as a variety theatre the Tivoli hosted massive names such as Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel. The building became a bingo hall in 1966 and remained open until 1997 when it fell into disuse and disrepair. The Tivoli Theatre Company acquired the building in 2009 and began restoring the venue. It finally re-opened in October 2013, presenting Inferno, an original play by Tom Bywater. Today, the Tivoli Theatre is a multi-functional mid-size venue once more. It now hosts a wide variety of performing arts events including musicals, comedy, plays and pantomimes. The Tivoli’s historic auditorium seats 450 people, offering them a perfect view of the action. However, the theatre is now accessible to 21st century standards, containing several spaces for wheelchair users. The Tivoli also contains its own cafe and restaurant where visitors can relax with a drink or a snack before a show. Past performances at the Tivoli include Danny John-Jules, and Joseph Purdy Productions' production of Rapunzel in July 2018. The venue also welcomes regular annual events such as Aberdeen International Comedy Festival. There are few better places to enjoy an evening's entertainment in Aberdeen than at the city's grand Tivoli Theatre. Don't miss out on all the fantastic performers passing through the venue soon.
